PPC Group: Commencement of construction of a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Amyntaio

October 21st, 2025

  • The new station will consist of batteries with a total installed capacity of 50 MW and a storage capacity of 200 MWh.
  • It will be capable of supplying the power system with capacity of 50 MW for 4 hours.

PPC Group continues to invest in the critical field of energy storage, commencing the construction of a new Electrochemical Storage Station (BESS) in Amyntaio, in the area of Amyntaio TPP.

The new station, being constructed by the wholly-owned subsidiary of PPC Group, PPC Renewables, will consist of batteries with a total installed capacity of 50 MW and a storage capacity of 200 MWh. It will be capable of supplying the power system with capacity of 50 MW for 4 hours.

For the construction of the new BESS station, liquid-cooled batteries of innovative LFP technology will be used, maximizing both utilized energy and safety during operation.

The construction of the new storage station begins, while the construction of two more electrochemical storage stations is already underway in West Macedonia, in the areas of Kardia and Meliti TPPs, with a total installed capacity of 98 MW and storage capacity of 196 MWh.

The role of energy storage units for the system is critical, as they aim to support the operation of adjacent photovoltaic power plants and contribute to the stability of the electricity system, optimizing the management of generation from RES Power Plants, maximizing their degree of contribution, as well as fully harnessing the potential for electricity generation from RES.

In this context, PPC Group has already announced that it will construct in the region of West Macedonia, in Northern Greece, energy storage projects of 860 MW. In total, these projects will create over 1,300 jobs during the construction phase and hundreds during operation.

Among the energy storage projects, the two pumped-storage projects stand out, often referred to as “natural batteries” that utilise two reservoirs located at different elevations. These include the project at the Kardia mine, with a capacity of 320 MW for 8 hours, and the project at the South Field mine, with a capacity of 240 MW for 12 hours, for which the licensing process has already been completed.

Apart from the storage projects currently implemented in Greece, a BESS unit is already under construction in Bulgaria, with a nominal capacity of 25 MW and a storage capacity of 55MWh.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of RES PPC Group, Mr. Konstantinos Mavros, underlined that “the energy storage projects currently underway in our country will shape the future of the energy system. Such investments will ensure the optimal use of generation from RES and, what’s more, the stability of the electricity grid in our country, as well as throughout the European continent. PPC Group pioneers in this area as our investment plan includes significant investments in energy storage systems”.
