Actions to combat climate change

Withdrawal of Power Plants

In the course of recent years, PPC S.A. has decommissioned lignite-fired and oil-fired plants and is accelerating the withdrawal of 12 lignite-fired power plants of an approximate capacity of 3,4 GW by 2023, alongside the closure and rehabilitation of the respective mines.

Modernizing capacity

In the context of modernization, PPC has replaced significant capacity in old plants with new environmentally friendlier modern technology-based facilities, and has upgraded existing installations so that they operate based on the best available techniques.

The modernization of the Company’s capacity includes the following:

  • Completion of natural gas-fired Unit V in Aliveri TPP of a net capacity of 417 MW. The Unit started Commercial Operations on 12.08.2013.
  • Completion of natural gas-fired Unit V in Megalopolis B TPP of a net capacity of 811 MW. The Unit started Commercial Operations on 27.01.2016.
  • Continuation of Civil Engineering Works and industrialization of mechanical and electrical equipment at the new thermal Unit in Ptolemaida (Unit V) of gross capacity 660 MW, which runs on pulverized lignite and is capable of generating 140 MWth for district heating. The operation of the new modern lignite-fired Unit will permit the phasing-out of old Units of higher capacity and secure district heating for the city of Ptolemaida.
  • Commissioning in 2019 of the new thermal plant in southern Rhodes with total net capacity of 115.439 MW, which runs on low-sulfur heavy fuel oil and can burn natural gas at Piso Kampos and Plaka Steni. The new TPP will replace older less efficient Units at  Soroni TPP, Rhodes.
  • Continuation of the interconnecting project of all Ptolemaida mines with the local Thermal Plants by conveyor belts to improve the quality of fuel supply in Agios Dimitrios Thermal Power Plants, improve environmental performance in Power Plants and reduce cost.

Initiatives – International Partnerships

Aiming to be actively involved in the international efforts to deal with climate change (reduction of emissions – impact – adaptation), PPC S.A. participates in several voluntary initiatives and projects.

By way of indication:

  • Co-operates with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the “Development of an Information Disclosure Plan in accordance with the guidelines of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD)”,
  • Co-operates with a specialized Consultant to “Design and Develop a Carbon Footprint Reporting Methodology” for a detailed assessment of the Company’s carbon footprint not only in power generation but along its entire chain of operations (upstream and downstream) in line with the relevant standards of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol or/and ISO 14064-1:2018.
  • Participates in the EURELECTRIC Working Group on Climate Change and Decarbonization.
