Renewable Energy Sources

PPC S.A. Group is the first undertaking to have been active in the sector of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in Greece since 1982.

Capitalizing on the country’s pronounced natural relief the Company continues to construct dams on rivers and create reservoirs, harnessing the country’s hydrological dynamics to generate power, thus maintaining the security of energy supply. Hydroelectric Projects often substitute for fossil fuel, which contributes decisively to cutting down CO2 emissions and reducing greenhouse effect.

PPC S.A. owns and operates 16 large hydro power plants, HPPs, in several locations in Greece.  Sfikias HPP on Aliakmonas River and Thisavros HPP on Nestos River are pumping, namely they store surplus power in order to release it later in case the demand exceeds generated power.

  • Commissioning tests at the Ilarion HPP Units were completed (installed capacity 157 MW with an estimated net generation of 330 GWh). At the end of the testing program, the Ilarion HPP will generate approximately 330 GWh of clean electric power from Renewable Sources annually, contributing to the optimal exploitation of Aliakmonas hydrodynamics.
  • • Construction is underway at the Metsovitiko HPP (29MW) for Civil Engineering Works the E/M equipment designs are also underway.
  • The Joint Ministerial Decision on the approval of Environmental Terms for Mesochora HPP was issued (Hydroelectric Project on the upstream flow of the Acheloos river, Units with a capacity of 2x80 MW and 1x1.6 MW), based on which PPC shall execute protective works to preserve part of Mesochora settlement.
