Energy efficiency / Rational use of resources

Energy Efficiency is one of major environmental issues for PPC S.A. Improvement of the Energy Efficiency has an impact on the consumption of primary energy without limiting the process of production.

For the most part, PPC S.A. consumes energy to generate power. Very small amounts of energy (compared to energy consumption for power generation) are consumed for PPC buildings (heating/cooling and electricity) or vehicles (service or corporate).

Several  examples of energy efficiency improvements in power plants and other corporate facilities are given below.

In the context of the measures for improvement of the Energy Efficiency in the energy supply:

  1. PPC has taken Improvement and modernization actions in its existing facilities.
  2. Has replaced old thermal units with new environmentally friendlier, modern technology-based and more efficient ones. The new natural gas-fired at the Aliveri TPP Unit V has an efficiency rate of 58%. The new Megalopolis TPP Unit V has an efficiency rate of 57%. The new pulverized lignite-fired Ptolemaida TPP Unit V will have an efficiency rate of 41,5% and installations for district heating with a capacity of 140 MW. Also, as of 2025, it is scheduled to be converted to natural gas-fired Unit, while its capacity will be increased up to 1000 MW.
  3. Through programs of cooperation between the Company and the competent Municipal Entities of energy Municipalities, the heat generated in the West Macedonia and Arkadia TPPs will provide thermal power in the form of hot water to meet the demand for urban heating in Kozani, Ptolemaida, Amyntaio and Megalopolis.
  4. PPC improved the efficiency rate of Agios Dimitrios TPP by ensuring steady and regular supply of adequate quantity and quality of fuel.
  5. PPC has scheduled to optimize fuel management system at Atherinolakkos and Rhodes TPPs to achieve further fuel saving.
  6. In the non-interconnected system, the Cyclades power connection project will lead to significant primary energy saving.
